One thing that's always fascinated me is what draws a fan to a certain artist: Why did I stop by the Suzanne Vega board rather than the Joan Jett board? Why are you reading this here rather than a similar post on a Stevie Nicks board? What makes the fans of one artist distinct from the fans of other artists? Are there distinctions between the fans of the Doors and the Beatles?
I noticed something about myself many years ago regarding music. I'm drawn more to the artist than to the song. I'm interested in what motivated the artist. I'm interested in their personality characteristics, their likes and dislikes- in undertanding the essence of the artist. .
During the last month or so I've purchased 4 CDs and a DVD by Suzanne. I've had the opportunity to read a lot about her, listen to interviews, and get a feel for her as both an artist & person. I wouldn't say that I understand her essence but I'm comfortable that I've learned enough to satisfy my interest.
I would describe Suzanne as a woman committed to her work, a woman with a clear artistic vision that she's woven into a terrific career. I see Suzanne as someone with great determination & perseverance. Words like brilliant & insightful come to mind as apt descriptions of her work. Despite the fact that some of you think I've been critical, I have nothing but admiration for her. She has made a difference in the lives of many people through her art, and she has made an effort to live her artistic vision in reaching out to others.
I also have no criticisms of this board. You've given me the opportunity to express my thoughts, feelings, and opinions without censor. It may be true that some of you didn't always agree & others may have been suspicious of my motives but...I didn't come here seeking approval or 100% agreement. There have been a number of thoughtful, insightful responses to my posts. I have also read many really interesting posts that had nothing to do with me.
As some of you already noticed, I tend to throw myself into things. The advantage of that is it allows me to expore things far quicker than if I used a more passive method. The disadvantage is I can be too abrupt and seem disrespectful. On this particular board that seems to have caused some friction. Perhaps my writing style is too abrasive. Perhaps you guys have simply gotten too close to accept "a complete unknown." But I leave with no hard feelings, no sense of anything being broken. I have definitely enjoyed my stay here. Although I won't be posting anymore, I'll continue to be a Suzanne Vega fan. She is a very special artist!
All the best,
Tim Connelly
