Oops - I forgot to mail the disk - I will put it in the post to Anneka tonight!

Review: I think Scott's Mix may have finally knocked Danielle off the top spot for me...
Almost all of these I can now hear in my head without needing the disk.
I get the impression you’re into lyrics – most of these have very powerful words.

Song Against Sex – excellent start, fantastic words and sound
Step Aside – good (I’m biased because a friend of mine is a relative of one of the band and raves to me about them)
    Go! – like the words
From Blown Speakers – I’m still hooked on this, and bought The Electric Version
Glad Girls – the light that passes through me = this dark life shot through with light?
    I Can't Stop Smiling - ok
Better Son/Daughter – perfect! I’m hooked on this one too. You'll be happy....
    Undercover's On - ok
Wild Pack of Family Dogs – nice turn-round at the end
Timber – an amusing way of putting it
Past Imperfect – the persistence of memory
Soul and Fire – upsets me the way it seems to slow down about 5 seconds in?
    2 Cool 2B Forgotten - lovely
Friends of the Enemy - ok
Indefinitely – v good – the meaning was twofold
Magic Bullet Theory – not for me
    Wires and Waves - ok
Watery Hands – not for me
Confessions of a Futon Revolutionary – excellent! Power to the people!
    Passenger Side - ok
No Depression – ok. A lifetime ago, the word “depression” meant something different
Dragon Lady – an absolutely fantastic finish! You chose well for the first and last!

    Many thanks

    Mike

    Review of Scott’s Mix

Hi Scott – Sorry I’m late, but as usual I didn’t have any time at all during the last months. Unfortunately I lost your sleeve notes, so I won’t be able to comment on them...anyway, here we go:

Song Against Sex – Neutral Milk Hotel

I quite like this song, but would have to listen to more to form an opinion. Is the rest like this?

    Step Aside – Sleater Kinney

Cool rock beginning! I could listen to more of this! Reminds of P J Harvey in a way...

    Go! Apples In Stereo

This song is not so much my cup of tea, although it does remind me of Madness. The middle instrumental part is great!

From Blown Speakers – New Pornographers

Cool song. I really like this! Is the rest like this?

Glad Girls – Guided By Voices

    Another cool song!

    I Can’t Stop Smiling – Velocity Girl

And another! I also liked Go Coastal from Lauren’s CD (although in this song it’s a woman singing and here it’s a man, isn’t it? They switch singing leading vocals, I guess...) Anyway, great style!

Better Son/ Better Daughter – Rilo Kiley

Ah, Rilo Kiley! Lauren was the first to introduce this band on her mix and by now I have their album “The Execution of all Things” –great album! I’m just afraid, this is one of the songs I’d skip...it’s not bad – but I prefer the other songs.

    Undercover’s On – Rival Schools

Cool Vocals. Reminds me of David Poe

Wild Pack of Family Dogs – Modest Mouse

Not my cup of tea (right now – it might be my mood...)

    Timber – Neko Case

    Another miss...

    Past Imperfect – Lloyd Cole

Yes, I remember I loved this right from the beginning!!! Is the rest like this?? Which album is it from?

    Soul And Fire – Sebadoh

Not bad, either....could listen to more of this

2 Cool 2 Be Forgotten – Lucinda Williams

I really love this song, and by the way I have Lucinda’s album “Car Wheels On A Gravel Ground”, and although I really like her voice and almost every song, I can’t listen to the whole album. Somehow it gets on my nerves after the first five songs....don’t know why. I guess I’ll put each of the songs on a different compilation one day...

Friends Of The Enemy – No Use for a Name

    Cool beginning, Great song!!!

    Indefinitely – Old 97’s

Not bad, but I’m not sure I could listen to a whole album by them...

Magic Bullet Theory – Texas Is The Reason

Nope, not my cup of tea (although it might grow on me...)

Wires And Waves – Rilo Kiley

This must be from their first album, right? This is a cool song as well....

    Watery Hands – Superchunk

    Cool, I like it

Confessions of a Futon Revolutionary – The Weakerthans

    I don’t mind this...

    Passenger Side – Wilco

I like this song – certainly have to get more into Wilco

    No Depression - Uncle Tupelo

Sounds very country-like to me, although it’s not bad

    Dragon Lady – Geraldine Fibbers

Yeah, I like this! This song certainly grows in intensity...

    Conclusion
A great compilation, although some songs are very similar in style, especially in the first half of the CD. Still there are a few bands/artists I’ll certainly check out, especially Lloyd Cole and Wilco.
    Thanks for sharing!!

Hi Annika, I’m happy and pleasantly surprised to see you mostly enjoyed my disc. You had a bunch of questions about the bands and I’ll try my best to address them. I’ll do this in order, and briefly (hopefully).

Neutral Milk Hotel -- This is one of their faster songs. Lyrically and stylistically, this is a good representation of their 2 albums. They use a lot of instruments and there are lots of lyrics. I saw them open for Superchunk years ago and was BLOWN AWAY by how powerful they were.

I think you asked about Sleater Kinney in Bob’s review…The song I included, musically is really atypical but fit in nicely with my five-song powerpop intro. This is the most important American punk band in the last 10 years.

New Pornographers/Neko Case – The New Pornographers song is off The Electric Version. It’s a very uptempo/poppy record. If you liked this song, you’d like the album. As for Neko, she is the female voice you hear in the New Pornographers. Sorry you didn’t like her country side. I have to say though that lately I’ve been enjoying her rocking side better.

Velocity Girl – Sarah Shannon sang about 95% of V-Girls songs. I chose an Archie song for this comp because it fit that happy/pop sound I started out with.

Rival Schools, No Use for a Name – I can’t believe anyone liked these songs. So I think it’s very cool that you liked them.

Lloyd Cole – This is off of the album Lloyd Cole and the Negatives. The Negatives included: Jill Sobule (She sang “I kissed a Girl” in the 90s) and Dave Derby (singer of the Dambuilders, an awesome 90s indie rock band). Lloyd is an amazing songwriter and this song is a great representation of his work.

Sebadoh – I keep a copy of this mix in my truck and listen to it often, and even I end up skipping this song. I love this band and song, but I wish I would have put on one of their more upbeat songs instead…this is my only regret on this disc. I’m glad you liked it regardless.

Rilo Kiley – Just wait until next month when More Adventurous is released. This band is going to take over the world. They are easily my favorite band of the past year and half. This song is off of their first album Take Offs and Landings.

Anyway, I hope this helps you in your musical pursuits. And again, thanks for commenting on my mix.

    Scott
