Ehmm, no; FBR appeared on LC's 1971 Songs of Love And Hate.

The Amazon info refers to Jennifer Warnes' Cohen-covers album of this name, but in fact it was released in 1987 when it seems it ushered a new wave of interest for LC in the US...

There's also a *great* Judy Collins version of that song...

    best,

Zeynep, I just got your disc in the mail today and of course popped it into the CD player. I'm digging it. Big Star is such an indirect influence on me (they really influenced the Replacements/Paul Westerburg, who I adore). I've been getting into Big Star and Alex Chilton's solo stuff during the past couple years.

I know I somewhat complained about electronic music in Andras's review, but #1 Crush has been one of my favorite Garbage tunes...I even bought the Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack (I'm so embarassed to write that) just for that song. I dig the Bjork song too. What album is that from? I didn't recognize it, but I haven't been paying too much attention to her lately (even though I keep buying the albums).

There's so many great bands on here: Elliott Smith, one of my favorite Tori songs that isn't on Little Earthquakes, and of course the dark, dark sounds of the amazing Nick Cave.

I will of course, do a more indepth review shortly. But for now I will say, this is a fine piece of music!

    Hello Scott;

It's great to hear that you are liking the songs on the CD. :-)
Bjork's "Play Dead" was an extra track from her Debut album. Especially the entrance of the song is enough to bring chills to me. I simply love it.

looking forward to reading your indepth review.

    all the best;

    Zeynep

Zeynep: This is a pretty solid disc. There were a few songs that for whatever reason (rational or not) that I didn’t really dig, but for the most part I found this to be an enjoyable disc. If anything it was worth it to hear the Bjork tune that we Americans were denied when Debut came out. Below is my usual song by song recap.

Bjork: Play Dead – I have Debut, but this is not on my version, which is too bad because this song is great. This is the side of Bjork that I adore. The song has a great beat and her voice is wailing.

Big Star: Thirteen – As I mentioned before, I love Alex Chilton. If it wasn’t for Alex and Big Star, bands like the Replacements and Soul Asylum probably wouldn’t have ever existed. This is a mellower tune, but great nonetheless. Not so little known fact: Big Star is the band that originally wrote and performed the theme song to That 70s Show (Hangin’ Out)…Cheap Trick’s version of the song is now the theme song.

Cat Stevens: The Wind – I’ve never really been able to get into the music of the now named Yusuf Islam. This song doesn’t bother me though.

P.J. Harvey: A Place Called Home -- I have a strange relationship with Polly Jean’s music. This song is definitely one of the good ones from this album. I’d still kill for another Sheela Na Gig or 50 Ft Queenie, but this is still way better than that duet with Thom Yorke.

The Boss – Secret Garden – I want to like Mr. Springsteen. I mostly do, especially when he’s rocking out (go figure). His mellow stuff is fine I suppose. This is a mellow tune and is fine.

Tracy Chapman – I don’t know why, but I’ve never gotten into her. I think it’s because I hated the song Fast Car when it was popular (I was probably moshing to Metallica or GNR at the time). She’s good, I suppose, but I never go out of my way to hear or not hear her.

Tom McRae – I don’t know why, but I’m reminded of Michael Penn or Neil Finn when I hear this. It’s pretty good.

Lifehouse: Breathing – So a few years ago, Lauren and I went to the local DC Alternative station’s Holiday concert. Moby was there and was as surly as he was great… Green Day headlined and was awesome as ever. There were some other bands too. Lifehouse was one of them. It was around the time when that tepid “Falling even more in love with you” song was popular. We did our best to give them a chance (heck one of the guys from Pearl Jam “discovered” these guys). Unfortunately, we spent most of their performance laughing at them. Horrible radio-friendly drivel. Sorry.

Garbage: #1 Crush – In my last review I mentioned that I liked the real revved up Garbage stuff and their dancier side bores me. WELL THIS SONG IS THE EXCEPTION! This is one of their best tracks ever. Awesome beat and Shirley’s creepy/sexy vocals are as great as ever.

Elliott Smith: Between the Bars – Elliott was a brilliant musician. It’s a shame he took his own life a couple months ago. This is off of Either/Or if I’m not mistaken. If you like this song I would suggest picking up anything by him.

U2: The Ground Beneath Her Feet – This is a great U2 song. I’m not always on the same page as these guys, but 90 percent of the time they blow me away.

Shivaree: Goodnight Moon – I’m not familiar with this tune. It’s pretty cool. The singer kind of reminds me of Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. I’m not so much a fan of the backup singing during the chorus, but the verses are cool.

Sting: Fields of Gold – The Police were awesome (let me just get that out of the way). With that said, I find Sting’s solo work to be boring and uninteresting. Sorry.

Sertab Frener: One More Cup of Coffee – Not familiar with this tune either. This is an interesting song. I think I like her voice. I think I like this song. I think I’d rather write about the next artist…

Nick Cave: As I Sat Sadly – This is from one of the only albums of his I don’t own. I love Nick Cave. His stuff in the 90s, particularly Let Love In and Murder Ballads really excited me. This is really good too. Fun Fact: When he isn’t touring, Nick rents out an office and goes to “work” every day. This office has a piano of course and he works on songs from 9-5 like a working stiff. I need a job like that.

Tori Amos: Caught a Light Sneeze – I just ordered her last studio album last night. No lie. This tune is off Boys for Pele, an album that I thought was just OK. Actually with the exception of the brilliant Little Earthquakes, I’ve found more of her albums to have one or two great songs and the rest not so exciting. This is one of the songs I like though.

Eric Clapton: Get Lost – Never really got into Clapton. He’s certainly talented and a legend. Just not my cup of beer.

Kath Bloom: Come Here – GO AWAY! Sorry, but I’m just not a fan of this style. Reminds of 60s folk music...The vocals are just too precious and weak sounding for my tastes.

Travis: Slide Show – I’m still not sure what to think of these guys. I suppose I can take or leave this. I was recently trying to insult a friend who likes these guys. I told him that Travis was a poor mans Coldplay…and Coldplay is a poor mans Radiohead. We then battled it out on the pool table for the title of King of the World.

Leonard Cohen – Nirvana sang: “Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld. So I can sigh eternally…” I do not own any of his music, but I can see why so many bands I like are influenced by him.

    Dear Scott;

Thanks so much for your review, it was very fun to read! :-)

By the way if you are not familiar with Cohen's music I think you should definitely buy some of his albums. He is worth checking.

    all the best;

Sorry I'm a little late ... I'll have the CD in the mail tomorrow.

Zeynep, overall I enjoyed your CD. I can only wonder what you'll think of my CD, you wrote in your notes how you put mostly sad songs, since you love them ... my CD is full of happy songs (or, at least happy-sounding songs)!

But, I did like most of what you had on there ... I like sad songs too ...

    1. Bjork - Play Dead
Sometimes I like Bjork ... sometimes she's a little weird. I like her here. This wouldn't be 'everyday' music for me, different than my usual style ... but, good. I like it.

    2. Big Star - Thirteen
Not sure if I know any Big Star songs. This is an enjoyable acoustic song.

    3. Cat Stevens - The Wind
I didn't think I knew any Cat Stevens, though I've known *of* Cat Stevens. But, as soon as the song starts, I know it. Don't know if it's from the hippie local radio station in our town, or from a commercial ... but, I like it. Another acoustic guitar-based song, nice rhythm.

    4. PJ Harvey - A Place Called Home
Good song. I only know a few PJ songs. She varies her style quite a bit. This song has a nice, quick tempo. I like it.

    5. Bruce Springsteen - Secret Garden
Not a big fan of this one. I like some Bruce songs, this one is just too slow for me.

    6. Tracy Chapman - Broken
Aside from Fast Car, I may have only heard one or two other songs by Tracy Chapman. I enjoyed this a lot.

    7. Tom McRae - End of the World News
    Pretty good tune.

    8. Lifehouse - Breathing
I know this song from a few months back when they were overplaying it on the radio. Didn't even realize it was Lifehouse. They sound like a lot of those generic rock bands out there. I'm not a Lifehouse a fan.

    9. Garbage - #1 Crush
This song is awesome. Years ago we saw a festival show, and every band was just disappointing ... until Garbage came on. They rocked! Just like in this song.

    10. Elliott Smith - Between the Bars
I'm sad that I didn't get to know any Elliott Smith before he died. (I'm sure I've overheard songs Scott's played, but that's it). I'm about due to raid his CDs to load onto my new MP3 player...

    11. U2 - Ground Beneath her Feet
This song is a little different for U2 (though, they vary a bit -- and sometimes I love their songs, and other times they're just OK). I wasn't familiar with this song previously... it's pretty cool.

    12. Shivaree - Goodnight Moon
Not familiar with this band at all. It's really interesting. I enjoyed it.

    13. Sting - Fields of Gold
    Not for me.

    14. Sertab Erener - One more cup of coffee
I love the strings. And her voice is really pretty.

    15. Nick Cave & the Badseeds - As I sat Sadly
I knew one Nick Cave song years ago when it was on 120 minutes (back in the early 90s it was on Sunday nights on MTV, they played "alternative" videos for a few hours). I almost saw Nick Cave at Lollapalooza '94 but he was rained out (I was huddled for cover in the spoken work tent when he was supposed to go on). No other bands were cancelled, it must have been a brief thunderstorm. Anyway ... I enjoyed this song.

    16. Tori Amos - Caught in a Lite Sneeze
I've listened to Tori for a long time, though some albums I've listened to more than others. I do know this song, and like it a lot.

    17. Eric Clapton - Get Lost
    This song is all right.

    18. Kath Bloom - Come Here
This is OK. I think there's too much drum for the style of vocal, or something ...

    19. Travis - Slide Show
Pretty good tune. I'm not sure overall how I feel about Travis - I've heard a handful of songs, all somewhat different. This song is slower, more acoustic than the others.

    20. Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat
Good song. I really don't know any Leonard Cohen. I enjoyed it.

If I had to describe this album--er, compilation--in one word, that word would be 'intimate'. Play Dead, A Place Called Home, Broken, Breathing, #1 Crush, Goodnight Moon, One More Cup of Coffee, and Famous Blue Raincoat are my favorites, though there isn't anything here I didn't like. Thanks, Zeynep!

I am still really enjoying this one!
Particularly the Björk, and "The Ground Beneath her feet". (Lots of SV fans seem to like Bjork too).
The Cat Stevens one is an old favourite too. Good assortment!

    Review of Zeynep’s Mix

Hi Zeynep! I just got your CD. Great Mix! I knew I would like it when I saw the track listing.

    Play Dead – Björk

I realized that there is quite a lot of stuff I like by Björk, including this one. Which album is it from?

    Thirteen – Big Star

Definitely like this! Is the rest like this?

    The Wind – Cat Stevens

I LOVE Cat Stevens! But I had never heard this song before. I like it very much.

    A Place Called Home – P J Harvey

I love this song. Interestingly this was the song that I first heard by P J Harvey – I liked it immediately and got her album soon afterwards

    Secret Garden – Bruce Springsteen
Nice song by Bruce. I’m not so much into his music, but I like this song

    Broken – Tracy Chapman

Ah, Tracy Chapman! I really like her latest album, but you have to listen closely to get the full benefit. It’s not an album that grabbed me immediately, it took some time. Definitely like this song!

End of the World News – Tom McRae

Great song! Don’t know Tom McRae. Is the rest like this?

    Breathing – Lifehouse

Hm, not bad! Never heard of this band before.

    #1 Crush – Garbage

I discovered Garbage recently. Never thought I’d like their music, but I do! My boyfriend has their first album which I think is great. I also like this song.

Between The Bars – Elliott Smith

When I saw the title, I knew it had to be a guitar accompanied song! Great song! Is the rest like this?

The Ground Beneath Her Feet – U2
Never heard much U2, but I think I should. This song is great!

    Goodnight Moon – Shivaree

Definitely like this. The music reminds me a lot of the new French music scene – only this is in English...great!

    Fields of Gold – Sting

I’ve always loved this song, ever since it came out.

One more cup of coffee – Sertab Frener

I like the Oriental touch to this song. Is this a Turkish artist/band?

As I sat sadly – Nick Cave

Never liked Nick Cave’s voice so much. I’m afraid this is no exception. Maybe I just have to get used to it, though....

Caught A Little Sneeze – Tori Amos

Ah, Tori Amos. Boys For Pele is a great album, although I didn’t have the time to listen to it much. I’ve heard it often at a friend of mine, but now that I have it myself, I hardly listened to it. This may be because my CD player doesn’t work properly...Definitely like this song!

    Get Lost – Eric Clapton
I like some of the music by Eric Clapton, but not everything. I like this song – great guitar work. Which album is it from?

    Come Here – Kath Bloom

Have you seen the film Before Sunrise? One of Kath Bloom’s songs is part of the soundtrack, I think it might be this one. Great voice , a bit like Joan Baez. Thanks for putting it on your compilation!

    Slide Show – Travis

Travis is another band I have to check out! Amazingly their music was played on the radio over here...! Which album is it from?

Famous Blue Raincoat – Leonard Cohen

I’m afraid Leonard Cohen isn’t for me. His lyrics are so poetic, but I can’t get used to his music – or rather his voice.

    Conclusion:
Great compilation. Zeynep, you seem to be into calm his music and you also seem to like guitar, like me. The ones that stand out for me are Big Star, Tom McRae, Elliot Smith, Shivaree and Travis, thanks for sharing!
