I tend to listen to a lot of female artists and female-fronted bands. Not exclusively, but lately these are the CDs I find myself grabbing most often to bring along on vacations.

The CD is burned and ready for me to drop in the mail ... but, liner notes aren't quite done yet, so I'm debating whether I send on time and mail a booklet when I can get around to it (or just add more notes here), or mail the whole package a couple days late ...

Might I suggest that you mail your CD now and add notes to the list later when you get round to it. That's what I've done, and it will help to keep the weight down for international postage costs too.

Thanks for posting the listing; I'll add your link to the SoP:

Pee Shy! One of my all-time favorites, and at one point one of the main reasons to live in the Tampa Bay area. Do you know about the Caulfield Sisters, one of the spinoff bands (Cindy and Mary plus a new drummer)? I've got them on my contribution to the tree, after deciding against including "Tree Craps," "Red Ink" or "The Axe Song."

Also, I've read that "Mr. Whisper" is going to be on the soundtrack of the next Robert Altman movie. I hope it's a little more prominent than "Left of Center" was in Pretty in Pink.

No, I didn't know about the Caulfield Sisters, thanks for the tip! I actually don't know much about the band. I discovered them when a promo copy of 'Who Let All the Monkeys Out' was sent to our college newspaper office when I was managing editor.

I, of course, loved it, and kept that CD ...

    Lauren,

Got your CD this evening in the mail! I'm going to debut it tomorrow on my drive to work, and then all weekend (and I guess all month). Looking forward to it!

    Lauren,

Your disc has been in the van CD player for the last 3 days. I've done a lot of driving this weekend, and I think I'm now on the fourth spin of the disc.

I really love it so far! I'm positive I've never heard any of these songs before but There isn't a single one I don't like! This music really sounds like the kind of stuff I listened to back in college... around 1988 to 1994. It's that witty, melodic, post-punk rock music that I love!

I just had no idea there were so many cool chick bands out there. It's like discovering gold! I'm kind of sad to think I have to send this on to Fred in a month. I'm definitely dubbing a copy. (hopefully the RIAA won't put me in prison for it)

I'll write more in detail about each song after I digest it all a little longer.

I like the cover art... that cool girl and her band over the pink paper. Who is that girl? She's such a babe!

Seeing that picture caused a total flash back for me. When I was 17 a friend of mine took me to this little community college rock concert with a bunch of talent from the school. Most of the bands sort of bored me, but then this girl named Lara Petersen took the stage and just blew me away.

She was wearing a thick, burly, gross brown bathrobe and thick pointy geek glasses. She had this longish blonde hair hanging off her head in tangles, like she'd just gotten out of bed at 7PM to wander on over to the rock concert. She was singing these kick-ass punk rock tunes she'd written herself.

I just never had any idea a girl that cool could ever possibly exist. I was like "My God! She's everything I always wished girls were, but aren't!... I LOVE her!" I had this huge crush that lasted over a year. I joined this "rock ensemble" class that summer that I heard she'd been in the semester before. Sadly she didn't take it a second time. I saw her around campus once in a while, but never got to talk to her. She was this "older woman". She was 19! She was in college FOR REAL!

Then she kind of evaporated, but I still heard tell of her through vague connections off and on for a while longer.

Never did know another girl as cool as Lara in the decade and a half to follow. It's nice to know they do exist... in fairly large numbers as evidednced by this disc! It's also great to see that the dates on this music are all between 93 and today. This is a movement that's alive and kicking! It's got a future! (Y'all just wait until my daughter comes of age!)

ha ha ... that's, um, me, in 1995 or 1996, with our college band, the New West.

You'll get the bass player's CD next month ...

    Glad you like the CD!

    Lauren,

I posted some response a week ago that seems not to have made it here. As for your being the babe... well, Holy Guacamole! You Rock!

I'm Still loving this CD and, as a musician, it's really brought me back to my forgotten punk rock roots. I've been working on my own album (in my spare time) for almost a year now, and hearing your CD really was inspiring.

I had the good fortune to get your CD here in September, when I've been working on the last details of recording and as a result, I spent my week of vacation time putting on a hell of a lot of guitar tracks that otherwise wouldn't have been recorded. I'm shy when it comes to guitar, but I was inspired to push the envelope and the results are pretty cool! Thanks!

Of course it would be nice if I could tell you that my album is being published and promoted by sony... and that your influence would have some measure of global impact, but instead it's just a shabby, home grown CDR. The distribution will be measured in dozen(s). I'd love to send you a copy anyway, if yer interested. If nothing else you can rest easy in the knowledge that your mix CD influenced at least one rogue musician.

Still listening... and fully intending to copy the disc before sending it to Fred...

    Pat

    Hi Lauren -
    Greetings from the west coast.

I've been really enjoying LAUREN'S MIX.

Great tunes. All of these songs are new to me. Of the artists I was only familiar with Aimee Mann, Sixpence None the Richer and weaklazyliar.

I'm loving it. My daughter who is six years old now is REALLY ito singing along with girl groups. I want to make her a copy of this.

She's really into Natalie Imbruglia, SV and Zeynep's Passionate Eye and Undertow from the tribute CD.

Thanks for putting this together. I'm especially enjoying Litany, weaklazyliar and Rasutina but I have a feeling that as I have more time to listen, I will end up liking them all.

Have you ever heard the Japanese girl group Shonen Knife? Very up, happy, rockin' band.Funny lyrics too.

    :-)
    FJ

    Hey FJ,
Just looking thru some posts and realized I never responded to you.

I'm glad you like the CD, I hope your daughter enjoys it as well! I still intend to put together some liner notes one of these days ...

Yes, I know of Shonen Knife. We have at least one album, but, I never really got into them.

OK, here's another of my so-called reviews. This has been my favorite so far. I especially like Paint's Peeling, Go Coastal, That's Just What You Are, and Karen By Night.

All this great music I never heard before is not helping my chronic EWS :-)

I've posted this pink disc on to Annika. But owing to the illness of my father my weekends have all disappeared this month... A copy of the disc has stayed on my MP3 machine and I promise I will catch up with it and review it.... Although I haven't done justice to the previous two either, and the next one has just arrived ... aargh!

A lot of these sound fairly similar, to me - not entirely my cup of tea - but I really like the Rilo Kiley ones.

    Hi Lauren,

thanks very much for your CD! So far this is the best CD for me. You really seem to be into female artists which is great! And mind you – apart from Aimee Mann I hadn’t heard from any of them!! I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for a full review, since it usually takes a long time for me to form an opinion – sometimes it takes years!! But don’t worry, I’m not going to make you wait that long. ;-) On the other hand I find all the songs very simelar and it’s hard to say which ones I don’t like. So far I can say I love Rilo Kiley – is it a band or a solo artist? Anyway – thanks for sharing!!

    Cheers,
    Annika

    Hi Annika,

I do listen to a lot of female artists. Not exclusively, but since such a high percentage of the music I listen to is female-fronted, I decided to make an all-girls mix.

I did also intentionally pick mostly songs that had a similar feel -- so if someone doesn't like that style, it's quite likely that they won't like anything. (Mike seemed to fit that category).

I'm glad Rilo Kiley is standing out for so many of you (from my CD, and Scott's)! They're a band, fronted by former child actress Jenny Lewis, and for anyone interested in downloading more songs, they rotate live concerts on http://rilokiley.net.
