funny that i called those five verses i mentioned above the chorus to "anniversary". to me, they always were and still are, and suzanne used to repeat them, both in the demo version and in live renditions of this song.
it's also true that when i first heard it i thought of this song as having no chorus, just like "neighborhood girls" or "song in red and gray". as the song is sung now it feels that way to me, with only the last two lines of every stanza working like one, especially with the background vocals. still, those five verses stand out musically and work more like a bridge now.
either way, chorus or no chorus, bridge or no bridge, the thoughts i wrote earlier still apply. and i have to say that the demo version and the one on the album are like mirror images of each other, to me, in the sense that they both mirror the essence of something. so i'll never be able to have a favorite, which is a great feeling to have for a song that has proved essential to me during all these years.
