I heard this song a few times. Somebody sent me a bootleg MP3. I know that's a no-no, but this is one that's impossible for me to buy. At any rate, I lost it. Maybe it's still on my HD, I'm not sure.

Anyhoo... This really struck me as an attempt by Suzanne to capture a style that's not her own. I think it comes off as awkward because she didn't quite grasp the style.

I really think that the term "Golden" in this number has connotations of "Golden Oldies". The style of the music is quite reminiscent of "The Oldies"... in other words, old 50's & 60's pop rock.

I get the sense that "Mr. Golden" was in fact, somebody whose music rather did capture the spirit of the oldies. And in another sense, his music has become old gold to Suzanne. When she first heard it, she didn't realize how much she'd come to love it, and now, years later, this album/tape/CD... whatever it is - it's one of her all time faves.

This song is then, a tribute to Mr. Golden. The lyrics are different than most SV tunes, because she's trying to word it more like an old pop tune.

That's my take on it, anyway.

Mister Golden is not a musician.
Mr. Golden is not the fellow in Song in Red and Gray.
I believe that Golden is one of Suzanne's best works. Listening to it, the love for Snr. Oro is great. He has -become- golden. There was a time that maybe he was just copper.

The circumstance of the writing of this song really shows off Suzanne's talent to pull together many bits of string and threads to make a lovely piece of tapestry.

Okay, I've just heard it again! Dan helped me... er... "find" it again. I've changed my mind, at least about it being awkward. It's great. The music is right on, and this is most-definitely roots rock.

It's roots rock from back at that point in history where blues branches off into folk, country, and rock. I said on another thread just yesterday how I'd love to hear Suzanne do a real rootsy album, and I guess this is what it would sound like. I wonder if this song hints at her new direction?

The treat here is the way that Vega voice and imagery work against such a backdrop. It feels very strange at first, but it's pretty cool once you get used to it.

Willy, I haven't had time to digest these lyrics, so I can't really comment on that aspect of it, but I still say this music sounds like a "golden oldie".

Anyway, thanks Dan! I'll check back to this thread when I've gotten more familiar with the song.

Can someone please help me how I can get hold of this song „golden“? Is there a chance to download it legally? Or to order the Japanese edition from “Songs in red and gray” – amazon-japan doesn’t work, they won’t ship it to Germany. I am not even able to here the sound-clip in the mp3-section on this site, because I use apple and therefore don’t have a windows media player.

So if anybody could help me, I would be very thankful!

Being the sort of person that I am, here is what I did, you can apply this to all of the rest of the clips.

    1. Went to the mp3 page
    2. Right clicked on Golden, did a "Save Target As" (translate this into Mac-ese)
    3. Opened the .WAX file in a text editor program.
    4. Input the link up to the "?" in my favourite mp3 playing program.
    5. Enjoyed...Party!!!

BTW, both links are the same.

There are some of us towies that have offered a little help for situations like this.  Listen to the clip and then ring back in.

I have tried to find this for weeks.  I bought red & grey when it was released and later became aware of this track, Golden (I have been a SV fan since the ‘80s).  I meant to buy the Japanese release some time ago, but just put it off.  Recently, I tried to buy it from Amazon Japan where it was listed as available.  I got the real run around there.  First they said it would ship in a week and then it was listed to ship by December 2007 and then they emailed me to say it is out of print.  At that point they changed their website to reflect that in fact the Japanese version is no longer available; it is only available from other sellers listed on Amazon Japan (used and new), but unfortunately, they do not ship internationally.  I tried to order it from some other Japanese sites, but no luck.

I have been aware of the mp3 sample of Golden listed on the SV site for quite some time.  But this is only a sample.  Where can I get the complete track in high quality / lossless format?

Thanks in advance for any help.

OK. I know what to do. First, we should create a "Golden Club" with all the people claiming the right to have "Golden" in their SV collection. Then, we should manage to make at least one friend in Japan who would be kind enough to order the Japanese edition of SiR&G for each member of the club (with a few extra copies that we would sell at "golden" price to other young fans and to make money, so that this story remains moral after all).

Just for the record: strange I could get the Japanese version of B&C on I-Tunes (incl. "Obvious Question"), but not of SiR&G
