    Hi

So what's the consensus then? I guess the best way would be to have the listing only posted and then send the listing with notes in hardcopy along with your tape/CD.

    Agreed?

    O.K.!
    Cheers,
    Annika

    Morning music lovers

Less than a week to go until the official start date of 1 September so you should all have some idea of what's going on your compilations! I've had it pointed out to me that 1 September is Labor Day in the US so you folks can send yours out on the 2nd.

I'm working on the FAQs at the moment and will post them up some time over the next couple of days. It will also include instructions on how prospective organsisers should go about starting a tree, just in case it works out and others get anxious to join another one.

As for track listings and sleeve notes, I think it would be a better idea if everyone were to start their own thread with a clear heading such as:

    "TT1: Cams' Compilation"

The review process will then be easier as reviewers can simply add to the appropriate thread.

Also, please include just a track listing at the top, and then sleeve notes below. That will allow reviewers to copy/paste the track listing to a word editor and make it easier to know what's what - it works well this way. Once everyone has got their listing posted, I'll make an index post with links to each person's thread which you can then save to your favorites - you'll want to do this, believe me.

As for posting hard copies of listings and sleeve notes, as this is a truly international event, I think it could bump up the cost of postage quite considerably. My notes are probably going to be around four pages long so it's probably best to just write a track-listing on the CD/tape box and post the sleeve notes to the board. People can then print them, read them on the PC or whatever.

I may post the FAQs and thread index on my own site so that it is easier for me to maintain. Hope there are no objections to this.

I'll try and post up my listing later on today or tomorrow so you can see the general format I'm talking about. I'm having a devil of a time trying to choose my Nick Harper tracks though - I could quite easily choose ALL of them!

    Watch this space...

    Cheers,
    Cams

Okay, I've got a draft of the FAQs uploaded to my site:

    http://www.puretranslation.com/personal/towie/inde x.htm

Have a glance through them and make any comments or suggestions. It's fairly comprehensive but pretty much covers everything. Questions more than welcome.

And remember, each person should start a new thread with their listing, after which I'll add an index to the FAQ page to make things nice and easy.

    Cheers,
    Cams

I've now added the Spreadsheet of Power:

and updated the FAQs so that you have a list of clickable Qs at the top.

Just so I'm clear... (sorry if this is a stupid question) On the copy that we send out, is the idea that we NOT give away the artists, thereby insuring that the listening is truly unbiased?

On another note, I'm afraid most of my artists are going to be fairly simple to guess. I'm not really the connesseur that I ought to be, but I'm trying to find a track from each artist that shows them in an odd, uncharactaristic light. Hopefully that makes up for it. I dunno. Maybe I'm just getting last minute jitters. I'm sure what I sent out on Sep 2 will be a last minute remix.

Lastly, I have to say, it's been very difficult restraining myself to an 80 minute CD. I came to this project with so many ideas, but so much of it ended up on the cutting room floor! It's been a real test of judgement to put this simple mix CD together.

Patrick, there *are* no stupid questions!

I think some people prefer to listen blind so as to have an unbiased opinion as you suggest, although I personally like to see what's coming. In fact, I'm not sure I've met anyone who didn't like to read the track listing but I simply migrated the format from another forum. That's why, when I posted my track listing I included some space so the reader would have to scroll down, but it's probably not really necessary.

As for the restraint thing, tell me about it! I guess that's part of the fun and means the listener ends up with a distilled version which probably means the more quality choices. I initially tried to overburn to a 90 min CD which worked to some extent but clicking back and forward between tracks was somewhat erratic so I had to cut some more - ouch! Lou Reed had to go which was disappointing.

    Hi Cams,

I have another question: Where are we going to post our track listing and notes? In this thread? I thought I read there will be another towie tree board but I haven't seen it yet. Will it come up the 1st September at undertow or on your site?

    Cheers,
    Annika

I got a reply from Eric, the board administrator and should've come back to the board with it. He basically thinks the Towie Tree is a great idea, but that we should keep it in the Towie Lounge so that it doesn't look like vega.com is condoning illegal copying of music. In fact, I'll just copy/paste his reply here to save any confusion:

"Just checked out the Towie Tree thread - 47 posts! - and I think I'd prefer to have it as a fan-initiated thread and not as a separate moderator-created section, as the latter might imply to some that Suzanne approves of 'illegal' copying of other artists music. If you wanted to organize it elsewhere, I think that'd be cool."

So we'll be staying in the lounge unfortunately. In order to make things easier, you should start a new thread with your listing. That thread will then be yours to add notes to as you wish, and others will subsequently post their reviews to that thread. I have created a spreadsheet (the spreadsheet of power!) where you can see the running order, check who should have what and when, and also use it as an index as I will be linking everyone's name to their Towie Tree thread and so by bookmarking the spreadsheet page you'll be able to find each person's thread very easily and go there with a click.

The spreadsheet of power can be found here:

    http://www.puretranslation.com/personal/towie/sop. htm

So far you can click to my and Fred's listings.

let me know if you have any more questions, and that goes for everyone!

Looking forward to seeing some more listings appearing!

BTW, aren't we getting a bit over complicated? All these rules, where you should and should not paste, copy, etc. Q&A, FAQ, separate topics...
I personally don't have much to say about the songs I included on the CD. I'll make a booklet, and you open it only if you want to.

Fair enough András. I don't see it as being all that complicated though; you do as much as you want to do, but it helps everyone else to review your CD if you've at least started a thread with your track listing. There has to be some sort of system in order for the tree to be able to work, otherwise it would just collapse.

It's all about the music though at the end of the day, and the review process helps as it's nice to get feedback and you have to listen properly before writing one!

I'm with you on the last-minute jitters, Patrick, or maybe it's just my typical indecision.

Among the difficulties I've encountered are:

-- Sticking with an artist's most characteristic songs or the ones, as you put it, that place them in an unusual light. -- Picking my favorite songs vs. those that best fit with what seems to be the theme/mood of the collection. -- Choosings songs I'm listening to a lot right now vs. those I haven't picked up in a while.

Plus, for some reason I've decided to take a lot of songs from vinyl, which is much more time consuming than ripping them off CD.

But this is fun! It's neat already to see what other people have chosen (not to mention a little guilt-inducing, since I'm far from finished).

    -- Bob
