Here's a curious thought... I know this is just daydreaming, but wouldn't it be cool if Suzanne herself were in this tree?

On the one hand she might be intrigued and even influenced by the other music we towies listen to. But on the other hand... how cool would it be to hear a mix tape compiled by Suzanne?

Yeah, I'd thought the same thing - it would be great to hear what Suzanne listens to - I guess she must like Coldplay since she got the new album for her birthday. Wanna join in Suzanne? Aw, go on...

BTW - a couple of folks have asked about CDs vs. tapes - either is FINE. My compilation will be on CD.

Well, not to give anyone any ideas but, as I recall, someone in the last tree I joined had the same problem and solved it by making two CDs ...

I think it would be better if we restricted this to one tape or CD, otherwise it could potentially be too long to give a proper listen and review. It actually takes quite a bit of time and effort to do this properly and get the most out of it. And believe it or not, distilling a selection of tracks down to one disk or CD ensures you select the ones that really CAN'T be missed, resulting in the long run in a a better compliation.

    Just IMO

I'm totally with you, Cams. I was thinking of sending in two tapes, but then the very same thoughts occurred to me...

    Cams,
When are you going to send us the addresses of all the related people in this tree? I'm busy preparing myself for this event.

I must say my compilation is rather eclectic, they are obviously not in the same genre, I do believe it's funky.

I hope Suzanne is still going to join us, it would be the coolest thing ever. I am curious to hear what she listens to, and to hear her opinion. We are all here cause we really like her and admire her work, and we sure as hell would like to hear her opinion on our compilations. Wow!!!!! Or am I childish now?

I'll email each participant one postal address once I've got all the addresses in and the running order is finalised. Group emails will be sent BCC too - I try to keep privacy to a maximum.

The start date isn't until 1 September so there's still plenty of time.

    Enjoy your planning!

    Hi Cams,

I have another question. Should we write a little to each song, what we find fascinating about it, and if it's another language than English write something about the contents as well?
Or would that spoil the hearing experience?

    Cheers,
    Annika

    Hi Annika

You should most definitely write something about the tracks you've selected for your compilation. It makes it more enjoyable to know why a song was chosen and what it means to the chooser.

What happens on the other forum where I do this is that once each participant has completed their tape/CD, they post a track listing and notes to the forum. Each participant has their own thread to which the reviews are added. Initially the track listing would go at the top of the post, followed by some

    S

    P

    O

    I

    L

    E

    R

    S

    P

    A

    C

    E

or "spoiler space" like that. That way anyone who wants to read the track notes has to scroll down to read them.

Another way of doing it would be to have just the track listing posted to the forum and then have a set of printed notes to post with the tape/CD. That could bump up postage costs though, particularly if notes run to two or three pages.

So basically it's up to each participant. A lot of people prefer to "listen blind", i.e. without any prior knowledge of what they're listening to. The benefit of that is that any prejudices you may or may not have won't affect your perception of the track, which can only be a good thing IMO. Imagine it, you hear a lovely pop track with five female vocalists harmonising some sweet melodies, and you like it. You then check the listing to find out it's The Spice Girls! Whereas if you already new who it was you'd probably decide you don't like it before you'd even heard it. I'm not dissing the Spice Girls by the way, just using them as an example as I know there are a lot of folks out there who really didn't like them.

So what's the consensus then? I guess the best way would be to have the listing only posted and then send the listing with notes in hardcopy along with your tape/CD.

    Agreed?

BTW, if you want to take a look at the "other forum", here's a link to the appropriate discussion board:
