    Hi Cams,

just had another thought regarding the compilations. I don't know about the other participants, but I guess, apart from Csémy and me, you all speak English as your native tounge, right?
Well - what I wanted to ask ACTUALLY (two hours later...) was about the language of songs. Should they be in English? I guess they should be mainly, because otherwise you could only refer to the music, not to the lyrics.
The reason I'm asking this is that there are so many non-English songs high on my list (German, naturally, French, Spanish...), but I'm not sure you could comment on them. Or would this be a nice opportunity to check upon the universality of music? I guess I'd love to hear a Hungarian tune someday (IF there should be one on your list Csémy...else, forget what I just said!) In that way, it would become a multicultural tree...
Let me know how you feel about that!

    Cheers,
    Annika

    Hi Annika

Glad you brought this up as I should've thought to mention it before. ANY LANGUAGE GOES!! And in fact other languages are to be encouraged, at least that's my view on it anyway. I have a lot of foreign music, mostly Russian but a good number of CDs from African artists singing in French and their native languages. The voice is a musical "instrument" too, something that was hammered home to me last Saturday night when I went to see an Israeli singer. Her voice was so powerful and beautiful, and the fact that I had no idea what she was singing about didn't spoil my enjoyment of the concert in any way, shape or form.

So thanks for bringing it up; I'll probably have a Russian tune on my compilation, and an African and probably French track too. I don't think I'll subject you to any bagpipes though ;)

    Cheers,
    Cams

Hey Cams -- I mentioned this to my husband last night ... he's not an official 'towie (not really into message boards/mailing lists) but he is a big Suzanne fan and LOVES making mix CDs ... would it be OK if he was part of the tree as well?

    Hi folks,

At 11 participants, the list is now complete and therefore closed for new sign-ups. Sorry to be so strict but seriously, I've seen these things simply crumble when they became too difficult to manage and with this one being a truly international event, well, I'm sure you understand.

So here's the list in order of sign-up:

    1. Cams (Cams)
    2. Annika (Troubadesse)
    3. Daniel (Iamnoti)
    4. Lauren Colvin (Lauren)
    5. Bob King (Bobking)
    6. Mike Gray (Mikeg)
    7. Georgia B (Loreleibansidhe)
    8. Csémy András (Csandras)
    9. Patrick Melody (Vendredius)
    10. Danielle Barnard (Danielle)
    11. Scott Colvin (Lauren's Husband)

Georgia B mentioned the downloading option but didn't actually say whether she wanted to join - Georgia? Shall I count you in?

And keep those addresses coming in - got about half so far.

Also, we need to decide amongst ourselves how long the holding period should be, bearing in mind that post from Europe to the US can take a while. There's no way of creating a poll on this forum, is there?

My own personal vote goes for a two-month holding period, and a changeover date of the first working day of every other month, i.e. 1 September, 1 November etc.

If anyone disagrees and has any other suggestions, please post them up so we can come to a decision; otherwise, let me know if you agree to the two-month period.

I'll write up an FAQ for the new sub-forum once it gets off the ground and we've ironed out all the details.

    Cheers,
    Cams

On the holding date, I think I'd favor a shorter period -- maybe one month. My fear is that two months is such a long period that people will forget about the deadline or lose track of which month is the due date. ("November? I thought December was the next one," etc.) Monthly is easy to remember -- on the first of the month, pay your landlord and mail your music.

Plus, at two months, it will take nearly two years to complete the entire cycle, and it would just take one person dropping out during that time to bring the whole thing to a halt.

Anyone who feels especially attached to a particular tape/CD can certainly make a copy for themselves before sending it on, of course.

The earlier trees tried a two-week holding period, which didn't work at all. It sometimes would take more than two weeks for tapes to travel across oceans, and then Bluey had to spend all his time scolding people about missed deadlines. It never felt like we were on time, which probably made the whole schedule seem futile after a while.

Of course, ALL languages should be eligible for inclusion. Even Esperanto or Klingon (are there any sogs that include both?).

    My two cents.

Yeah, I think ONE month is a good period, too!

I like the idea of one month too; I just figured that the cross-Atlantic post could maybe take two to three weeks which could leave the poor punters on either end of a cross-Atlantic compilation with only one week to listen to it. But if you guys think one month is long enough, then I'd be happier with that than with two months.

    Cheers,
    Cams

Yes, there are going to be 2 Hungarian songs on the CD and more surprises :o)

I favor the one-month holding period, as well.

What is the email address I should send my address to?

Ah! Sorry, guys...this sounds like heaps of fun, but I don't think I can do it. :-(
a.) my cd burner died about a week ago, and
b.) i live in Australia. delivery on either side of the fence might therefore be difficult.
But good luck with all of this! And i'll be reading everybody's reviews to see what kind of things everybody else is into. :-)
