a great opener to the journey (through a city and real life) that is "beauty & crime". a walk through places, memories, what used to be, what is now, and, most importantly, what is retained, what remains.

"river rain will clean the stain"

Fatima talked about the journey that B&C is and that it begins with this song, where Suzanne walks through places and memories. I truly experience B&C this way and almost always listen to the complete album in the correct order, seldom to an individual song (aah, like back in the good old vinyl-days).

Fatima’s thought of the journey showed me something that will be merely a coincidence, but a rather interesting one: B&C begins with a Z (Zephyr) and ends with an A (Anniversary). So we have the literal journey through the alphabet from Z to A.

there's another detail worth mentioning about the songs that are the book ends of this journey. here are the bridge to "zephyr & i" and the chorus to "anniversary":

"in spring the tide in Riverside
will wash away the cold and frozen
river rain will clean the stain and
    wash away wash away downstream"

    "Watch for daily braveries
    Notice newfound courtesies
    Finger sudden legacies
As they clean up every corner
    Wash down every street."

wash and clean: the same verbs, the same actions, the same need of cleansing in order to "clear the way" and "make the time" for all that is ahead.

ps: as i read what i wrote it strikes me that those verbs appear in the bridge (something that both connects and propels a song) and in the future tense on "zephyr & i", and later, when the journey seems to be over but really "the journey just begun", they appear in the chorus (something repeated and meant to be sung in unison) and in the present tense on "anniversary".

Yes, you are right. Fascinating. So the journey has just begun, you are moving from A to Z and start all over again.

And the last sentence of Anniversary is "They live on every street" - even on West End Avenue and Ludlow Street. Full circle! Wow, there is so much to discover in B&C.

Thanks a lot, Fatima, very insightful!

funny that i called those five verses i mentioned above the chorus to "anniversary". to me, they always were and still are, and suzanne used to repeat them, both in the demo version and in live renditions of this song.

it's also true that when i first heard it i thought of this song as having no chorus, just like "neighborhood girls" or "song in red and gray". as the song is sung now it feels that way to me, with only the last two lines of every stanza working like one, especially with the background vocals. still, those five verses stand out musically and work more like a bridge now.

either way, chorus or no chorus, bridge or no bridge, the thoughts i wrote earlier still apply. and i have to say that the demo version and the one on the album are like mirror images of each other, to me, in the sense that they both mirror the essence of something. so i'll never be able to have a favorite, which is a great feeling to have for a song that has proved essential to me during all these years.

sorry that the ideas above refer to "anniversary" and not to "zephyr & i", but the original thoughts started here. and since i'm all over the place, i'd like to ask where did the "ludlow street" folder go? there used to be one, if my memory is right, but i just can't see it.
