posso tentar dar-te a minha explicação à tua pergunta, mas enquanto portuguesa apenas. a minha teoria talvez seja um pouco pessoal, mas acredito que o nosso particular apego às canções da suzanne se deve ao facto de nelas haver uma forte referência à saudade, à memória, uma resistência às adversidades e uma sede de movimento, características que estão na base da alma portuguesa.

num certo sentido, sim, mas tendo em mente que o fado, enquanto expressão do ser português, tem um lado de esperança e de afirmação de vida que as canções da suzanne também têm (muita gente, quando pensa em fado, pensa em melancolia e tristeza, o que não é verdade, o mesmo se passando com a música de suzanne).

já agora, lê o que a suzanne pensa do fado no texto que ela escreveu chamado "impressions of portugal" (podes lê-lo na minha tradução para português em "murmúrios urgentes" e na versão original em inglês tanto aí como em "the passionate eye").

Concordo que há algo na obra da Suzanne que apela a um modo de ser português como a Fátima já bem explicou:

Já quanto ao Fado tenho dúvidas, penso que o Fado apela por vezes a uma certa tristeza, a uma contemplação do peso do destino, de forças que não controlamos, o que, se bem que também bastante português, me parece diferente do que recebo da mensagem da Suzanne.

Mas não sou um especialista em Fado.

concordo que o fado também apele a tudo isso que referiste, mas para mim, há algo mais nele do que isso. daí eu ter ressalvado que só se poderia pensar em fado e na visão da música de suzanne se pensarmos que há também nele algo de esperança e até de alegria e afirmação de vida. tudo isto que afirmo estará provavelmente mais presente no que se chama o 'novo fado' (nas apropriações e transformações que os jovens cantores fizeram dele) embora, para mim, também exista no fado tradicional. mas também não sou especialista de fado, tal como tu.

Problem is, you already know that, and I can't think of anything else to say other than dumb things like "it's hot here today"—you know, typical American stuff that we all pretend to be bi-lingual by throwing around here and there.

Someone please tell me why I took 9 years of French in school when this country is now practically 50% bi-lingual in Spanish?

I guess the bottom line is that you speak many languages and I speak one! Although said before, I delight in every new word in other languages that the Towies teach me along the way. I suppose you could say I'm a one word multi-lingual woman.

It's obvious that I'm totally out of my element on the Portuguese MB—I'll just read them (for fun) and keep myself from posting anything!

Only bits and pieces of Italian were spoken at home by my parents. My grandparents spoke more (esp. my grandfather who was a direct descendant). Unfortunately, both died when I was young.

"The rest of me" is Irish! I'm a 50-50 gal (and who knows what in between)! However, I do have a very patient friend (GG), who is trying his best to get me to a point where I can converse lightly when I am on holiday in (Italy) October. I really should just take a course, since I go there every year for a few weeks—hearing the pronunciation and the emphasis on different parts of the words are what the language is all about for me.

Seriously, thanks so much for the information—I'll see if I can "brush up", at least to say a sentence without embarassing myself.

I'm not sure where you're living...are you going to Shepherd's Bush in July?

Ainda não se sabe se ela irá voltar ao Brasil este ano. Mas fica atento ao Undertow que normalmente as novidades aparecem por cá em primeira mão.

Alguém pode informar onde adquirir os vídeo-clips que estão na sessão "Music videos" no site de Suzanne?
Existe um DVD contendo clips como Last Year's Troubles, 99.9F , etc ?
Caso não exista um DVD oficial mas alguém tenha os clips ,gostaria muito de adquirir.
