What a sorry mismatch - Craig Kilborn and Suzanne Vega!

I had never seen Craig Kilborn or his show ... and never will again. Stupid, inane, totally unoriginal, and very UNfunny. So why was our high poetess Suzanne on such a clinker? I have no idea ... but their program managers were smart enough, or masochistic enough, to put the class act - SV and Mike - on last. It became painful waiting, watching the host flub what could have been an intimate interview with superb actor William Macey!

When Suzanne and Mike finally appeared the studio crowd cheered wildly for her, so her appearance must have attracted her die-hard fans to a venue they normally would avoid like the plague! The lighting, though an attempt at artistic moodiness, made her look stark and tired - maybe that's exactly how she felt!? Her hair was cut and shaped in a tight, simple geometry that seemed to enhance the severity.

The whole gig seemed shaky, off-balance. Suzanne led off with a few chords that almost failed to launch Luka at all. Only once or twice did she seem to re-enter the song's emotional world, but she DID get there.

Just one of those venues, or moments, when nothing seemed to fit ...

My humble advice - Stay away from that show, Suzanne! It does NOTHING for you ...

    dear Suzanne,

thanks for writing, and sharing your road diary pages! You write so nicely!!And of course, thanks
for sharing the personal things as well!it can't be so easy! we could really feel those days spent without Glynn. I'm glad he feels better now.

Sounds a bit frightening about meeting those two strange guys in the hotel room. Consider-i guess you know-it could have been much worse, but fortunately it wasn't!
Take a rest/holiday when you can,-i know you will soon- you really deserve that in the family circle!!

I came home not long ago seeing a movie with Agnes
'Naqoyqatsi'(dir.by Godfrey Reggio, music composed by Philipp Glass). The music is brilliant , and the film is very expressive, although because of its topic- 'civilized violence'-it's 'a bit' disturbing.(The title in Hopi language means 'Civilized Violence'-as it is referred to at the end of the film.) Tell Brian Rose to see it if he hasn't done so yet when you next talk to him, I'm sure he will be interested.(Maybe you too). Also give him my regards!
I liked it anyway, Agnes was more hooked about the music than
the film, but later it turned out it was because of its topic. It's not like Powaggatsi in theme, although its shooting is brilliant.Strange new world!

hoping Ruby's ears will recover soon!
best wishes to you and your family (including the cat)!sleep well.

ps: I'm planning to send an update thing on Thursday.
pps: last year i wrote an instrumental piece 'flag' on acoustic guitar using some delay effect. I didn't 'picture' soldiers in the foreground or background there anyway, and the title is in Hungarian,
'zaszlo'(with a long accent mark on the vowels). I'm planning to turn it into a band composition, with some electric guitar and bass, without changing the original acoustic line, so the two other instruments would be 'around' that, would be really present.
anyway, there has been a very fruitful period behind us, writing several own songs-i wrote the lyrics-but this time the music is rather band development than my individual work. Besides, I wrote songs
for my solo thing as well, (there it's me who wrote everything).

Well, I knew I was going to be away on vacation/holiday when the show would be taped (and broadcast that night). So, I arranged with my father to have him tape for me both American Mavericks and the Late Late show. (My father admitted when I picked up the tapes that Suzanne has "a rather pleasent speaking voice", which is high praise.)

When I got home, while doing 4 loads of laundry and sorting a week's worth of mail, I watched the show. In addition to Suzanne who should be on the show? William H. Macy, a co-worker's college room-mate. Really strange/small world and all.
When Mr. Kilborn was telling that Suzanne would be on the show, it seemed that he was a real fan of her's. He played more than a snippet of Luka and both he and the crowd seemed to enjoy it. Then the bit with the writers (for the show) that have different talents came up. One said that he could sing any song in the the style of Axel Rose or the lead singer of AC/DC. Well, I thought, "what are the chances that Mr. Kilborn will ask him to sing Luka, Tom's Diner, or some other SV song?" Of Course he did. Realizing that it was all for fun and not trying to poke fun at Suzanne, it got a laugh from me.

Suzanne came on with Mike. Both were in fine form. My main complaint was there was not more songs, nor an interview.
Again, both the host and audience seemed to enjoy Suzanne's artistry.

I didn't see this show (our power was out for 12 days, if you can believe that, after a storm here in Memphis), but it's to Craig Kilborn's credit that he's had Suzanne on his show more than once over the past couple of years, if I'm not mistaken. He may not be as funny as Conan (who is?), but he seems to be a fan.

Headed to Nashville in a couple of days,

    Hank

According to rollingstone.com, Suzanne's appearance on Craig Kilborn will be shown again tonight. Is this true- would they repeat it so soon? It would be nice, I missed it the first time around.
