a dear friend of mine (you know who you are) made it possible for me to hear this song as it appears during the final credits of the film "jenipapo". i only remember hearing it with just piano (philip glass') and suzanne's voice (though maybe i'm wrong) and i also remember suzanne performed it live at the met with philip glass.
when i was listening to it today i thought this was a great stretch from the other songs in glass' "songs from liquid days". and yet i was attentive to the way suzanne delivered the words (together with the music), a poem written originally in english by brazilian poet antonio cicero. i knew the words but suzanne's voice made them more poignant and i just want to share this last part of the poem which gave me great comfort to listen to today:
"And yet when everything's quite like a lie
And only what is terrible seems true
You find within your heart a strange devotion
Toward that star against an ignorant sky:
You know its shimmering artificial blue
Has been delivered by the deepest ocean."
language, again.

(i shall go back to that thread soon) and then there are suzanne's two sighs, especially the last one, almost at the end of this song, such a wistful sigh.
chance is the only thing that doesn't happen by chance
