i believe so i might see.
    tangents of meaning and
    shafts of light drawing
    dancing chalk marks on fear’s
    babel blackboard. but silences
    are crying and a redemptive
    word missing.

"night vision" is a recurrent song in my life. every now and then our interior compasses go haywire and we lose the ability to see clearly. i've been in the dark often, struggling to find my path in the world, and this song has always helped me to see a way through it, whispering to me not to "give in too quickly". it gives me courage and hope every time i even think about it.

it is a song, like so many in suzanne's rich songbook, that can stay with you always, in the most secret and inner place, and then, by just the will of a thought or the power of a feeling, it surfaces and warms you up, right there, just beneath the skin. it's a 'tactile' song, so to speak, because, among other things, it deals with how things touch, blend and connect. it's about opposites - day (give thanks) and night (beware), sweetness and fear, light and dark - really touching each other, by the help of something that lives in between, and that can turn everything into an effortless and endless continuum, the circle of life.

to me this song is primarily about the struggle of finding and fulfilling one's vision, one's path. it's the central song in "solitude standing" since it embodies the struggle of every character and suzanne's as well, as an artist, seeking a truthful expression to her vision.

my path and the expression of my vision have eluded me so far. a sense of guilt and yes, of failure, for which i seek redemption, linger in my mouth like a bitter taste. but i keep searching and cutting "through the grain" and this song continues to give me strength and solace. i believe there will be light for me, just as i believe light is what is at the center of every suzanne vega song, especially and paradoxically, in this one.

the second paragraph of this post was taken from a text i've written which tries to underline the significance of "night vision" in suzanne's work. you can read it here, if you're interested: http://watermarks.vega.net/threading/step11.htm

    with affection,

I was always under the spell of words said later not in the beginning. It is still on my mind the image of sheltering someone in light, someone who sleeps and is so helpless. It is always so touching to see someone in sleep.

Thanks Fatima for opening my eyes. But still there is something what worries me in that song. We can find the line, we can find the shape, but I can only teach you night vision, as if that found life at night was not real. Night is a time of living in dreams. You found strength where I found my weakness.

    be well

Here's a link to a video interview with Suzanne on a Swedish TV program in 1987 talking about the making of Night Vision and then playing it live on her guitar... We're working on the rights to this for the upcoming documentary.

This song has always impressed me much, especially for its lyric, based on a strong opposition between Daylight and Darkness (Sweetness/ Fear). Obscurity seems to have the power to change everyday things (table, guitar, empty glass) in something unknown, that has to be discovered again: using other senses, like touch, but mainly eyesight –Night vision- (“Find the line, find the shape/ Through the grain,/ Find the outline, things will/ Tell you their name”). But above all I like the closing part: often in our lifetime we would protect people we love from everything that could make them suffer…(the dark of the night symbolizing an out coming menace, the perils in Life), especially when they are mostly vulnerable (“Now I watch you falling into sleep”…”Watch your lips fall open and your eyes dim,/ In blind faith”), but comes a moment when you realize that is wrong (and also impossible) “shelter [them] and Keep [them] in light”, and that you “can only teach [them] /Night vision”. You can only try to help them facing sufferings and difficulties of Life, being them an unavoidable and fundamental part of Life itself. In my opinion the text concerns also the conviction that no one knows the ”Perfect Way” of acting in Life, and that not all the principles on witch we build our Life are completely sharing, being them deeply connected with one’s own personal experiences (this also reminds me “Siddhartha” by H. Hesse).
Thank you Suzanne, once again, for this amazing song. GG
