Another one of my favourite Suzy V songs that took me a while to decide what it was about.
I really like this song because of the bemused, teasing attitude the singer has toward the subject of the song (which I'm assuming is a particularly convincing drag queen). The singer wonders, "What happened to you to make you more girls than girls are?" and wonders if he "kept the date with the steel side of the knife" (referring to, I assume, sex-change surgery) but then goes on to say "makes no difference to me what side of the fence you may happen to be" which seems like a particularly fair-minded, live-and-let-live approach to life I wish more people shared. I particularly like her teasing reference to the game of "show and tell"!! Cheeky monkey!!
Anyway, as a gay man I have a special fondness for this song (and Stockings!!)
99.9 came out when I hadn't been out of the closet for terribly long, shortly after graduating college, and it wasn't until I learned more about gay life that I realized this song wasn't about an actual woman!!!

Oh no not another gay someone.

There are lurking so many gays around here! I count 14 right now (including myself).

Brady, I really enjoy this song too-- particularly the line "not exactly natural, stunning nonetheless". I didn't realize that the subject of the song was (ahem) under the gaydar, but chalk another one up to Suzanne's wonderful ability to layer meaning.

Spikey, you count 14 out of (recently just over) 500? This place must be *crawling* with 'em!

Hesy Spikey, I'd like to know exactly how you keep track of all us gays. I'm envisioning a scorecard by the computer with all the 'towies' names on it, and they get a check mark if they make a gay reference... something like that?
Actually, that sounds kind of fun! Nice to know I'm not alone. (not that I really thought I was, come on now!)
Anyway, this is an enjoyable, humourous song.
I was watching Suzanne singing "Stockings" on Live at West 54th and that made me chuckle too. It takes a lot of nerve to sing a song like that live! I was even tittilated a bit.

Spikey I just figured it out (how you could keep track of gays). I forgot you could look at people's personal profiles on this list! Being new it hadn't occurred to me. So I of course looked at yours. You sure are cute!!!! I'd have my picture up if I were that cute too.

    All in fun,
    Brady

It does seem that way! Not my intention when I started this thread, but certainly not an unwelcome turn of events!
Welcome Luis! Another gay music teacher in the Southwest! I count two of us so far.
Spikey, I didn't mean to imply I thought you were vain. Just having a little fun! Being new I didn't know you could post pictures on your profile. I may follow suit!

Brady (I'm going to see Suzanne tomorrow!!!!!)

    Hi,

I've been away for a while and now I'm trying to ketchup *fg* with all the postings.
I had a look at this thread, because I've always liked AS GIRLS GO because of its melody, Suzanne's voice on it and because of the gay content.
Just to say, that if you haven't counted me,yet, make that 16.....

    GreetZ.

    Hooray Rolf!
According to Margaret Cho, "we're all a little bit gay..." including Suzanne, methinks, at least as portrayed in the song "Stockings".....

    Hi Brady,

yeah, different song, different album.... but I liked STOCKINGS from the beginning, just like GIRLS... both kind of showing how weak and fuzzy the distinctions between sexual orientations can be...
... and both showing Suzanne's ability of not only observing situations and retelling them, but also to dive into them and explore them....

    Cheers,

    Rolf

they are good songs you mentioned, but my personel favourite is "Tom's Diner"

i don't mind people coming out on this forum, but let me make it clear that i am NOT gay.
i am not biased against gay people, but i am NOT gay.

    Whoa!

It's a shame you feel you need to "come out" as straight, sgurd. Most folks around here will assume you're straight until you say otherwise. I guess that means I'm biased, since I do that too-- every day.

Anyway, this forum is a place where some of us feel safe to be counted as gay. If somebody really IS keeping a list (I'm not), surely nobody's on it who doesn't belong.

I hope that was diplomatic. Now I'll return to lurk-land and my school-work..

    ~enthusiastic wave~
