To my knowledge, there is just the single picture.

It does seem as if the picture became lighter. All of my Solitude Standing copies don't look the same at all. The brightness of the cover seems to vary a little bit.

    Hi Spikey!

I'll bet they're not the same! These things are printed all over the world (mostly price dependent now), and unless you have top notch quality control people, and are using state of the art precision devices for color—they will always vary a bit.

The general public wouldn't even notice a thing—but a Towie, who is looking for every fleck or color change that he/she can find, will spot it in a minute—as you have.

But you have piqued my curiosity, since this is my field, and now I'll be on the lookout in various stores to compare covers! BTW—how many copies of SS do you have, anyway? Storing up for Y3K?

    Love, Catherine

Maybe I oughtta photograph them for you. The difference is striking! I don't know if it will show up on a photograph though (it would if Joanne would photograph them ;) I'm sure).
Because some are just very dark, and some are just very light the covers seem different. On some you can hardly see that Suzanne has her gloved hands on her cheeks, they somehow are merged into her face. On the other (lighter) you can see very clearly that she is wearing black gloves.

    Spikes,

Please do—if you have a digital, and send them to my home address. I can't even imagine them being THAT off! Now I can see why you asked about the photo itself being different! I'm checking the stores anyway.

Thanks All for replying, and confirming that are likely some striking differences. I am gonna go ahead and replace it, as I really like the music on this one. Also, gonna get some of her others as her music and creativity has grown on me lately.

    Peace

What is the meaning of 'Her palm is split with a flower with a flame'?? I am confused by that imagery.

this is just my interpretation: throughout the song, solitude is presented as a double-edged character, a sort of 'femme fatale' in a film noir, and the imagery your refer to crystallizes it best as it clearly shows her ambiguity.

Spikey once asked Suzanne about this sentence. She did not really explain, but told about how she got to the idea. She watched a documentary about a drug-addicted girl, the girl told about seeing a flower in the flame (If I am correct). In my opinion you can see the opposites in it, but also the neccesarity of it both. The flame can be seen as dangerous, scary, passion and the flower as beauty or result of it. When I think about the flower IN the flame, it's more like there is no beauty without fighting the fear.
Why Suzanne made a split of flower and a flame of it I do not know but the explaination of Fatima sounds like I also feel it a bit. Would like to know this from Suzanne, but I think her way of making the lyrics is not always logical. I like it how she tells about this process like being a result of many ingredients.

corina, i remember suzanne talking about this in amsterdam last year. i didn't mention it before because i couldn't exactly recall suzanne's entire idea. the girl in the documentary was allured by the beauty she saw in danger (the flower in the flame). she couldn't see the split between the two.

when she was 9, suzanne wrote a poem called "by myself" where she already talked about the difference between being with yourself and being lonely. she already knew there was a split then and i feel this is why she had to keep it in solitude's character 20 years later.

for those of you who might be interested, the poem "by myself" can be found at suzannevega.com: just choose 'words' on the top menu, then 'articles, essays & poems", and finally 'a collection of suzanne's early poems' (it's the first one on that list).
