one of my favorite Suzanne tracks...I was happy to see that it was added to 'Retrospective'....its
the rocking side of Suzanne...wish they would do it in the 'Live' set. its one of those songs that I sometimes play 5x in a row!

You could hear it almost 'live' every day if you have the Headshots single or the No Cheap Thrill single where it is on, like me.

I agree that this is one of the best rocking tunes Suzanne has. It's also got the most characters since FM&DG. Fat Man & Dancing girl has... hmmm... five, counting the monkey. This one has the dealer, the narrator, Lambrain Pete, and Butcher Boy. Seems like the action and the intrigue are better in this one.

Can I ask this of anyone listening though?... In the liner notes (at least the American Release) we have a line that isn't heard in the song:

"When deuces are wild, you can follow the queen. I'd go too, except I know where she's been"

    What's that all about?

Maybe the Queen is a character you oversaw.

"Maybe the Queen is a character you oversaw."

But of course! The queen must be equivalent to the monkey! It all makes sense now:

i heard that she had planned to sing that line about the queen, but it didn't fit over the music...but it was kept in the linear notes anyway. it's a good line. i like it. :-)

i can't remember where i read that... hmm... ah well.

o.k. Suzanne, I confess. I'm the one who shouted out for 'No Cheap Thrill' at the first set at Joes Pub. I got the impression that you are no longer 'thrilled' with playing this song. 'Not on this tour', you replied. hopefully, you'll add it to the set again someday. In the meantime, I'll hunt down that B-side.
    love, larryt

There's a certain attitude about this song that I have GROWN to sort of dislike. But in the Summer of 1997 it was about all I could play. Seriously. It was my soul's theme song that summer. Sorta like a "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", but done by someone a little more artistic, if not so vocally blessed. And the instrumentation really rocked, too. "Cost you...cost you...cost you ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO PAY!!!"

I have the same problem, William. Sort of. I still listen to it when I play NOoD, but when I want to hear the song as such, I play the live version.

I am a particular fan of this song. It's on several compilation CD's that I have made to listen to on various car trips, and it's also my email address and username in several places. It's really fun to sing along with.

It's also a conversation starter. Very often when I have to give my email address to someone, they ask me where it came from.

I seem to be the only one who doesn't really like that song. I absolutely love the album, but it has a couple of songs that don't really work for me. There's "Lolita", "The Thin Man", and "No Cheap Thrill". It's got that "obvious single of the album" thing, something about the chorus that sounds a little too much like mainstream rock for me. It might sound like a mean thing to say, I don't know... But I get the same feeling every time I play that one: the rest of the song is ok, but the chorus is just too much.

Mine to although not as sweet as caramel and Headshots! a classic. How about Tombstone this rules too, in fact this is one of my best S.V. albums although its very difficult to have a favorite isn't it!!

Days of of open hand is also a great, however the first album will always bring them goosebumps up, but thats a personal thing!
