    I do believe that this song is one of the great 'unknown' songs that Suzanne has done.
    It is so lively and lovely. It also is decidedly a 'Suzanne' song, in that it fits her lyrical style.

    You think so? If I should choose one song that wouldn't fit her lyrical style the least, it would be this one (Well it's foolish to say it DOESN't fit her lyrical style, because she wrote it herself). This is the only song of Suzanne so far that doesn't give me vivid images in my mind, except for some lines ("Once your words they fell like pennies to the sidewalk"...or something like that) Overall, I think the song sounds extremely happy!

    (Still searching for lyrics on this one!)

    It's not in the Passionate Eye.

    That's why I'm still searching for the lyrics.

    Here's the lyrics for Golden as best as I am able to hear them from the CD

    In my heart's currency you are golden.
    You are shining like the sun upon a cold gray sea.
    Here's what I did not know,
    How I'd come to love you so.
    And in time all you'd be worth to me.

    Once your words, they fell like pennies to the sidewalk.
    And they shone for everyone, but they did not for me.
    Pennies disappear,
    But I still hold you dear.
    Golden's what you've come to be.

    You couldn't know,
    But I wouldn't show,
    How you brought to me a deeper kind of pleasure.
    In your sweet glow of light,
    Is the meaning of delight,
    And you came to be my treasure without measure.

    In my heart's currency you are golden.
    You sparkle like the foam upon a cold gray sea.
    Bubbles disappear,
    But I still hold you near.
    Golden's what you are to me.

    [You are golden,
    shining like the sun
    You are golden,
    Yeah!
    Golden's what you are to me.]1

    1 Male voice refrain, repeated 3 times. Sung by Rupert Hine. The "Yeah", mayebe changed to "Yes" in the second and third repeat.

    Of course these lyrics are copyrighted © by Suzanne.

    Awww...thanks so much for posting that!! You're great.

    Wow, I realllly like it... someone said earlier that it was a different suzanne song...SPIKEY! Yes, yes... he said that it didn't seem to fit her usual lyrical style, and I agree. There's less imagery, I think... Anyway, I do like it. I'm trying to imagine it being sung...and I think that'd be awesome...Hmmm...... Someday, I will find it... And be slap-happy. :-) Thanks

    If you haven't yet heard "Golden" - it was a bonus track on the Japanese version of Songs in Red And Gray -
    you can check out a clip of it here:

    In response to the post about Golden lacking in imagery:

    Golden does have both powerful imagery and symbolism.

    On the old Tow, there was a good thread that ran about the interpretation of the symbolisms in 'Song in Red and Gray' (the song not the album of similar title, for convention sake SiRaG is the album and R&G is the song in this post).

    In R&G color, material type (metal vs. cloth,etc.), and other conotative factors play a role in the song. A few examples for reference (don't jump on me if you disagree, these are illustrations and not closed to discussion) (hopefully I have got the table format down):

    red=passion emotion or the heart
    gray = intelect or the brain
    white = death and bones
    metal = hard unfeelingness
    cloth = warmth and comfort
    light = a source wisdom/enlightenment etc.
    warmth if by fire
    brass = metal tempered with light

    Golden employes these images/symbols and others that are classic to Suzanne's songs. For the sake of ease, the 2 characters in the song are SV (herself) and 'Mr. Golden'. Mr. Golden is like the Sun. He brings light and warmth to 'a cold gray sea'. This gray harkens to the gray in R&G. The sea, we have seen before in SiRaG, is a troubled, stormy emotional place (and cold).

    Next let's examine: 'Once your words, they fell like pennies to the sidewalk.'
    Things fall in Suzanne's songs, they come down from above, a sort of benevolent heavenly gift of sorts.
    Pennies are also used elsewhere. They are little bits of treasure. Bright (luminous), red, but metal. They combine several disparate (usually) traits.
    And sidewalk, how much more backward looking to the urban imagery of the album can you get?

    'Sweet glow of light' again, Mr. Golden brings to SV a source of solace, warmth, etc. SV is again telling us how wonderful Mr. Golden is.

    'You sparkle like the foam upon a cold gray sea.' Only when the sea is churned up does the foam form. Whether Mr. Golden is the foam or the sparkleing force, he has brought to the sea a luminence, a lightness. Things are no longer just being crashed up against the rocks. The foam that forms in the surfline at the beach has come to this 'cold gray sea'.

    I can see your point, and I'm aware of those symbolisms. The red is the past, and the present is the grey, right?

    I didn't say the song didn't contain strong symbolism, and that's what you've worked out here; I meant that the visions of my mind are not as strong as most other songs. Like I said, this song always makes me feel happy, it feels somewhat 'lighter' than usual listening to Suz. I don't have to 'close my eyes' and fantasize a story while listening to this song, and that's very uncommon for me and a Vegasong. That's why I said that, to me, it's an unconventional Vegasong. I don't know what that means, but I know I meant it when I posted the first time on this thread.

    Ah, I can see what you mean. This song is less a visual feast than the average SV song. It is more of an emotional song with a surface of ideas. Not to get to deep, but this is yet another song that if we could peer in on the life of Suzanne, we could see the pennies fall.

    As far as visual songs by Suzanne, I personally feel that TQ&TS is GREAT. When listening to it at a concert, I close my eyes and watch the sence go by. I also thing that Suzanne pulled off a master work in writing the words of the soldier. I can put myself in his place and those words would fit in my mouth naturally.

    I always have a strong feeling listening to Tired of Sleeping. They tie in to the horrible things that happen in my dreams every night. It makes me feel good. Weird huh?

    Although getting the Japanese SIRAG from Amazon.co.jp was really a treat, and I can see why it would have been included for the Japanese fans (as it is sorta Japanese pop-esque), I honestly don't think this is one of her better efforts. I guess as a sort of "feel good" simple song, okay, but I think some parts of the song are extremely awkward and it came out not so great - some parts aren't sung very well at all.

    So, everybody else position my head underneath the blade and drop. Get it over with quickly. Thanks.

    Here is the link to the Japanese version of Songs...
    http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/mu sic/B00005NYM5/
    There is an option for "In English" on Amazon.jp, but it ain't great. Use a web based translator to do the cut and paste.
    The layout is about the same as the .UK and .com version of the site.

    Hi, I don't think I ever heard this song, but the lyrics are BEAUTIFUL!!
    Maybe there is less imagery than in SV's other songs - yet it's the first one I think I truely understand.

    Cheers,
    Annika
