On Splendid Table today, they played the opening bit of 'Priscilla' between stories. It was a repeat.

    Hello all!

Tom's Diner, the DNA remix, was played on my local radio station Fox FM this morning, as part of their 'retro weekend' spot. I was so excited, I text the DJ straight away to express my heartfelt thanks and admiration! He sounded a little taken aback when he acknowledged the text on air! Now that I know they have SV in their catalogue, I shall be campaigning to hear 'Luka' next!

    Happy days!

Yesterday on Marketplace they played some of (music only as usual) Widow's Walk. I wish that I remembered the story.

Song of the day: Hands, Jewel

(edit) PS: While poking around their archives I found that you can search on the "bridge" music. Here are the results for: Suzanne Vega

We seem to have had a whole series of Suzanne 'sightings' recently! We heard 'Marlene on the Wall' played at a seafront cafe - and then, not long afterwards, my daughter heard her played at the hairdressers and also in Marks & Spencer's, of all places! (I think one was Luka and the other Small Blue Thing).

Just now though, I listened for the first time to a radio station called 'Passion for the Planet' which says it has "news, interviews and music from around the world; passion for health, the environment & alternative solutions." They were playing music when I turned on and, much to my amazement, they played 'Marlene on the Wall' when I had only been listening for ten minutes - at the most! It could just be a coincidence - or maybe they play her frequently! Who knows!

If anyone is interested in the station (which I found out about from a free magazine given out in a health-food cafe) you can listen on-line at http://www.passionfortheplanet.com

    Cheers,

    Chris.

There's the FELICTY tv show that they're still showing here in Italy, and a few days ago the Episode 18 / Time Will Tell was on and it has St. Clare in it, from Songs in Red and Gray. Wonderful song, wonderfully sung.

Last month at a cultural event in chinatown, related to freedom of expression and liberal alternative arts ("indignation"), opening song for the event: Tom's Dinner.
Two weeks ago, got on a cab heading towards some foodcenter at 2am. was very thoughtful about myself. When i told the taxi driver the direction, "Left of Center" started on the radio.
    Amazing.
What a superb taxi drive it was. I felt like Santa Claus and gave him some tip.
Stuffed myself with food, like Santa, and got back home happy and temporarily inflated.
Burned the extra fat in my 3 runs between my bed and the toilette.

hugs to all of you and a big smile

    - No. You're just hallucinating.

Saw Suzanne last nite on Classic VH1. Her album cover 'Suzanne Vega' is prominently displayed on Al Green's video of his re-make of "Simply Beautiful"
It's posted on the wall behind him as he plays guitar along with his bass player.

I only recently became aware of and very impressed by Suzanne Vega's music. I recently spent several days in the Ramada hotel on Václavské námìstí in the center of Prague and was very pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful picture of Suzanne prominently displayed on the first floor there. Does anyone know when it was put there and (presumably) when Suzanne stayed there?

    Happy new year to everyone.

Prague is a very nice city! (But,of course, Budapest is nicer!). I was there in 1999 to see a festival where Suzanne and Mike performed in duo. In addition to Suzanne, there were about 7 performers that day,- some Czech bands, and Bryan Adams and Alanis Morissette.
I and my friends enjoyed that day and the whole long weekend in Prague. As for the pic, if it's a black and white one,and comes from that period,it must be the same as in that festival's booklet (very nice pic anyway).

    Happy 2006 to everyone!
    Best wishes,
    Zoli

ps: As for Alanis Morissette, in the summer in Newcastle I 'spotted' the next in her 2004 album booklet, 'So-Called Chaos' :

    published by Szeretlek
administered by BMG Music Publishing International Ltd, ASCAP.
    (c) 2004 Maverick Recording Company.
    Made in the EU.

the word 'Szeretlek' is in Hungarian, and it means 'I love you'. Knowing her Hungarian origin, it is not so surprising. Her grandma escaped from Hungary after 1956.

Because the Night Belonged to SV Fans

Greetings from the very beginning of 2006,

So, two friends and I went to the annual Patti Smith (PS) New Year's eve concert (dunno how many years running but it was the first one my friends and I attended). En route to the show, I kept thinking about how much I wanted to see SV instead. I had looked up her earlier that morning on Wikipedia.com and missed seeing her perform live (the last time was April 04). I was happy to read that she may come out with an album (at last!) in late 2006. This year can't go fast enough!!

I have seen PS two other times before, all last year (i.e., 2005). Both times were incredible. She possesses this passion and raw energy I hope to have if I ever become a musician. It's almost as though she's in a trance while performing, and her hypnotic state is contagious to the audience.

My experience at this concert was quite different, however. Part of the reason may have been the higher price, and thus the "higher (socioeconomic) class" crowd. Lamentably, most of them seemed to be neither members nor followers of the PS "cult".

Also, because it was New Year's Eve, the concert was interrupted by a brief countdown and celebration of the 2006 (complete with recommendations for resoultions), initiated by PS and her band. This, to me, took some steam out of the show's momentum.

Lastly, PS's setlist seemed somewhat "off", in that the songs did not flow organically into one another. Also, I don't think she took one request, which surprised me, especially considering how haphazard the setlist seemed.

There were some amazing moments, however. In particular, the songs: "Dancing Barefoot," "Ain't it Strange," and "Because the Night." However, one of the most amazing moments was when my friend tapped me and said, "Look up, I think I see SV!"

I looked up to the balcony to see a woman who appeared remarkably similar to SV. We stared at her and after a few moments, in the midst of an uninspiring cover PS was performing, a few other concertgoers (maybe even members of the PS cult!) began to follow suit, albeit briefly.

When the concert ended, the mysterious woman got up and screamed out across the room, "Gretchen!" The tone of her voice made it us less credulous that this was SV. But I'll always wish it was :-)

    Sean

    P.S. Was it?

Sounds like a great concert, Sean! Where was it, if you don't mind my asking?

LOVE P. Smith!!!! She's the best—I would have given anything to see her sing "Dancing Barefoot" live again. You've just reminded me that it's been far too long since I've seen her in concert!

As for the SV "sighting"—well, it would have been quite the night if it really were Suzanne at the show, but regardless—the suspense and wonder of it all makes for a great story!

    Catch You Later—

Well, what do you know? Two of my favorite artists in one room. I must say, you are indeed a lucky man, Sean! And with great eyesight!

Now I'm beyond bummed that I wasn't there? Of all the concerts!!! You usually ask me to go!

    Glad you both enjoyed yourselves!
