This is the 4th song ("Freeze Tag", "Those Whole Girls", and "Stockings" being the first 3) that I have discovered tonight in my quest, going through all of the different album thread groups on this "songs" portion of the 'Tow, to not have its own thread/discussion.

Although for each of the first 3 I mentioned I actually gave something that at least remotely resembled a starting off point for intelligent discussion, I cannot think of any such thing for this song. I think it has actually generally been agreed upon as her worst or at least most pointless song. Now is the time for somebody to come along and disagree, or if at least to say nothing more than something like "well, given the high standards of quality of her songs and the low standards of quality of so many other musicians/entertainers songs, this being a 'worst song' is really not bad at all."

I totally disagree that this song is pointless!
You just have to know girls like Lolita to get the point!
It seems to me like there's a connection between "Lolita" & "Those Whole Girls". In "Lolita" Suzanne wants lolita to be one of those whole girls and run in grace!

I don't know maybe I'm wrong, but thats how I feel about it.

i totally agree with your disagreement. actually there are other lolita-like characters in suzanne's work: luka, and especially the character in "bad wisdom". all these characters are "too young to know/too much too soon". they have all been 'amputated' of something vital (and here the woman character in "men in a war" fits in as well) and their 'bad wisdom' tells them "[they] will pay for [their] life with [their] body".

so the connection you make with "those whole girls (run in grace)" is essential, because it is through the body that the "whole" (with a sense of spiritual grace included) can be achieved.

Yeah, perfect health in mind and body, that's what those whole girls are. It's not that I don't like the point of Lolita, I just don't like how the first part sounds.

Pardon my ignorance, but is this song based on (and/or a reaction to) the novel, "Lolita"? I just started reading it, and I'm curious. It's certainly not one of my favorite SV songs but it's interesting to see the connections.

I'm not an avid fan of fiction but I thought I should read "Lolita" before reading "Reading Lolita in Tehran" which is a great memoir I have heard about.

    Take care,
    Sean

    Sean,

Someplace I recall gathering the fact that, Yes it is about the book, not the movie(s). The Nabakov (sp?) book gave enough of a nudge to Suzanne's imagination, that she could see connections to other things that she was aware of.
