In response to the post about Golden lacking in imagery:
Golden does have both powerful imagery and symbolism.
On the old Tow, there was a good thread that ran about the interpretation of the symbolisms in
'Song in Red and Gray' (the song not the album of similar title, for convention sake
SiRaG is the album and
R&G is the song in this post).
In R&G color, material type (metal vs. cloth, etc.), and other conotative factors play a role in the song. A few examples for reference (don't jump on me if you disagree, these are illustrations and not closed to discussion) (hopefully I have got the table format down):
| red= | passion emotion or the heart |
| |
| gray = | intelect or the brain |
| |
| white = | death and bones |
| |
| metal = | hard unfeelingness |
| |
| cloth = | warmth and comfort |
| |
| light = | a source wisdom/enlightenment etc. warmth if by fire |
| |
| brass = | metal tempered with light |
Golden employes these images/symbols and others that are classic to Suzanne's songs. For the sake of ease, the 2 characters in the song are SV (herself) and 'Mr. Golden'. Mr. Golden is like the Sun. He brings light and warmth to 'a cold gray sea'. This gray harkens to the gray in
R&G. The sea, we have seen before in
SiRaG, is a troubled, stormy emotional place (and cold).
Next let's examine: 'Once your words, they fell like pennies to the sidewalk.'
Things fall in Suzanne's songs, they come down from above, a sort of benevolent heavenly gift of sorts.
Pennies are also used elsewhere. They are little bits of treasure. Bright (luminous), red, but metal. They combine several disparate (usually) traits.
And sidewalk, how much more backward looking to the urban imagery of the album can you get?
'Sweet glow of light' again, Mr. Golden brings to SV a source of solace, warmth, etc. SV is again telling us how wonderful Mr. Golden is.
'You sparkle like the foam upon a cold gray sea.' Only when the sea is churned up does the foam form. Whether Mr. Golden is the foam or the sparkleing force, he has brought to the sea a luminence, a lightness. Things are no longer just being crashed up against the rocks. The foam that forms in the surfline at the beach has come to this 'cold gray sea'.
My 0.0175 euro.
