Check out this nice cover of Queen & the Soldier by Holly Kirby. It's nice to hear someone who can do justice to one of Suzanne's finest ballads.

Speaking of TQATS covers, there are two more nice covers out there (among many more, I'm sure), by two Irish bands called Dervish and Gráda. Really nice.

"M.I.A. [stage name of maya arulpragasam], born in London, England, near the launch of the punk revolution, with ancestry tracing back to Sri Lanka: this genre-mixing, female fast talker grew up in a melting pot of innovative global rhythms and grooves — and they all are represented in Arular and Kala."

it's hard to truly describe m.i.a.'s music (although what she does with slang/language, the tempo of her songs, and the child-like/street-wise feel behind it are very striking) but i can tell you who i found in it: "another spinner of strange [...] threads", meaning, someone also making music essentially about the same thing — (the search for) identity (or a voice) as the pipeline to freedom (that's why it was so amazing to know suzanne finds her music inspiring too!)

Jane Monheit, Live at the Rainbow Room. Beautiful jazz singing with her pure voice similar to Ella Fitzgerald.

Oh, ahem right now?  Well… should I admit that I couldn't resist listening to this?

"…Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand…" n— Margery Williams Bianco n (The Velveteen Rabbit)

Blimey.  Some Suzanne of course. How could I not.  Moving the LP versions of her first 3 albums and other bits and pieces onto CD … finally.

And listening to lots of other stuff:

Momus – Voyager (his spacey, dreamy 1991/2 album)

Evil Records compilation – a compilation of techno-y type stuff from a netlabel

Front 242 - No Comment and lots of older Front 242 stuff

Moderne – the only two albums from this totally obscure early 80s French synth pop group

The Fall – Marshall Suite, Light User Syndrome and I am Kurious Oranj

Astral Projection – Israeli psy-trance pioneers (compilation of stuff I managed to cull from the net without people noticing SurprisedLaugh) [one for Yuval there Laugh]

Loreena McKennit's Mummer's Dance – just fell across this one on a podcast and can't stop playing it … arrghhh … might have a new addiction Laugh

I've heard of Astral Projection… I even hear they've made it big. But Trance music isn't for me, so you'll forgive me for not joining in… I could return the favor and say I like Flight Of The Conchords (which Suzanne does as well… she even tweeted about it a few months ago).
