Hey Wafer,

Good to hear you'll be there. I'll be seeing Suzanne the following week in the Seattle area. Have a great show, and please give us a report on it

Hi,

Just logged on to the new site and I was trying to remember the original mailing list.

It was WAY back, I think it was hosted by "meer.net" or something similar?

This was before vega.net and was only an email thing, none of this modern forum stuff….

Bit scary to think I've been a fan for around a quarter of a century!

Anyone else from those distant days?

Hi Kwackman,

Oh….you're far from alone!  I'm in the quarter of a century club (and a bit) myself!  Now you'll totally confuse Suzanne when she see you by changing your user name.  You'll have to give her a little time!!!  Hope you are well, I remember seeing you last (in person) in NYC and I believe once after—perhaps in the UK.

You my also have to forgive me if I don't remember you as your new moniker!

Be Well—

Catherine

**OK—I'm glad they're keeping the math simple. Never my strong point…if it goes to Algebra, I go back to lurking.

To All (here in this thread),

Bad Manners on my part!  I replied to Kwackman (he started things)—but certainly remember:  Cams, Bob Kind, Yuval*, RaMac, and Wafer!

Like myself, I've come across a number of Towie on FB when they either left, went lurking, or were just caught up in life and seemed to have vanished.

Hey {{Catherine}}  Welcome back.

What finally gave you the nudge?  Let us know so we can nudge some other "old" gals and guys.  I too have found myself lurking (to a degree) because life has just gotten so busy. Hope all is well by you, and I look forward to your casted pearls before us.  '-)   Peace,  Ra

(My last post had the math requirement of 1 + 1 !!  So I think we'll be OK)

ps Just found your other post.  Please disregard questions already answered.  Nice work, Yuval, finding Catherine on FB.  How odd it must have been to feel so deleted !  I was lucky enough to catch the switch right away, and while I had to reregister, I didn't get completely lost ,as it seems you did.  Well then, a double welcome back.

Speaking of real life getting in the way… I've been so busy with work lately, that I have stuff piled up in my 'this would interest the other Towies' box… bah.

I think Undertow is a mirror of Suzanne's career in many ways. When she was successful, Undertow was bustling and humming with activity and people, plus all the lurkers on the sidelines. As Suzanne's career took a tumble after SiRaG, so did the 'Tow, and quite a few old Towies left, never to return. Suzanne herself, once an active member (well, never more than a sentence or two, but still more active than now), seems to prefer the direct, albeit one-way, communication with the fans through Twitter and two Facebook accounts. I guess time moves on, and this is the age of the social network, not the forum community…

Then again, every once in a while a new member registered, someone who just discovered Suzanne and her awesome music, and the flames are kindled a bit. This usually happens after a show, when Suzanne is on the road. A real upswing for UT would be when Suzanne releses new material, hopefully as soon as a year from now. Until then, we pretty much have the place to ourselves…

Hello!

I know this thread is old, but just felt like "waving" after re-registering myself here.  I would lurk on the Emory Law School (?) mailing list from about 1995, and would occasionally post from about mid 1996.  Just ventured to the website after picking up Close-Up volumes one and two, and after meeting somebody who told me that TQATS is her favourite song, and is wondering if Suzanne Vega has other good songs – I will make her a mix-CD!  I think she came across it on YouTube, as she doesn't have any of her albums.

I saw Suzanne when she visited Perth in 2008, and did the inarticulate thing, as she signed The Passionate Eye for me.  For the second time.  I enjoyed the friendly culture of The Undertow in the late 90s and early 00s – in 1999, "Connecticut Dave" bought a copy of The Passionate Eye, took it to a book signing, and then posted it, all before receiving any money from me.  That culture of fans sending each other things based on trust was awesome!  I also have CDs that Towies have sent me from Hawaii, Germany, Poland and Sweden!  (Hello to you, if you've posted me anything!  As a new fan in the 90s, I had no awesome releases to exchange!)

My perception is that the change of format from email list to web discussion board changed the quality of communication and relationships in a negative way, but it might be my imagination, and I'm sure it was unintended.  Maybe it was just because I wasn't participating so much anymore.  Maybe because Undertow was no-longer so intimate?

I'm thinking about how my musical life has changed since joining The Undertow.  When I joined I owned very little music, had bought my first CD less than two years before, and didn't know about operating turntables and playing vinyl singles (I needed to learn about the different centre hole sizes to play a Left of Centre single I found!).  Now music is a much bigger part of my life, and I spend many weekends at local Indie gigs, and am on the board of a community music organisation that aims to get people that are alienated from mainstream society involved in music making, and I'm trying to learn guitar myself.  And songwriting, though I don't think I intend on publically performing anything that I write.  I like to be around people that see a value inherent in creating things, and in DIY aesthetics, even if there is no commercial objective/success, or it isn't to my taste – it's a value that doesn't seem to be shared by the mainstream culture of my city.

Cheers!

Neil

Welcome back, Neil

As your old buddy Yuval has been busy checking out Suzanne's new play in NYC, I'll try to fill in. Be sure and check the "Suzanne's theater play" thread. I came late to the party a year and a half ago, but like the Undertow, she has me now.

The forum was redesigned a year ago, and we've heard from Suzanne only a couple of times since. As Yuval says, most of the action is on the Facebook side.

I am impressed with your description of how your exposure to her music "expanded your horizons" as Suzanne would say. I've noticed a similar effect, to include literature I would never have known of otherwise, and meeting wonderful people from around the world.

I too have sent off CD's to people sight unseen, and received the same, from other Towies. This shared bond brings a wonderful comradeship, I've found.

After an endless litany of hearing about the worst this species does, she is so refreshing, always showing us the best we can be.

So don't stay away so long this time.Smile

Hey Neil, Welcome back.

While I was not a Towie during the list days, (I guess I've been around for about 4 years)  the revamping of this site last year did seem to change the tone.  Mostly I suppose because the change took everyone by surprise and wiped-out all previous posts.  Felt harsh.  Seems as though many Towies have not returned.  However, this little community is pretty tight.  I'm guessing that as time goes by we will grow and feel more like the days of old.  I'm hanging in because I know that the quality of discussions here tend to be so much more thoughtful and real than many other sites.  I think if Suzanne was more present here, as she was in those golden years, we would grow more quickly. (she seems rather busy with other endeavors ;-)  or maybe it is just that everyone is busier than ever.  But whichever, there are good people here who share freely and honestly.  We're just a bit lower-key.

Glad you are back — take your coat off and sit a spell.

Peace,  Ra

Hi Ed and Ra,

Thanks for your welcome! :)

I was just looking around the site and was surprised that somebody left off a forum for Suzanne's first album.  I need to go look at that theatre thread now!

I wanted to write there about how much I like the live versions of Some Journey, like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..mdartgBykA

I love the simple bass and guitar arrangement, in addition to the twists in the lyrics and the "railway" strumming that she does.  It works better for me than the more ethereal sound of the album, though I'm curious as to whether there is a live version out there with synths, as live it would always sound like it has a little more edge to it.

Neil :)

Hi Neil,

I really love that song, too. I like the "railway" term you used. I never heard that before. It's fun to watch her play like that, too.

I think it's one of her best storytelling songs. Her strumming really sets the mood up for it.

How about the "Left of Center" from the same show? I love Mike's strong bass, when they play it as a duo like this. Suzy is kind of lost in the floods for a while, but it's a good video aside from that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..65EB7888C7

I don't think she's used synthisizers (sp?) since the eighties, has she? I couldn't find anything like that on YouTube.

Here's another favorite of mine from that show.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..playnext=4

Be sure to check out the video clip on the home page from the CM play. She's great in the role, from what I've seen (2 songs in her show last winter).

Hey Neil,

I put off replying here because a mountain of work and obligations fell on my head the minute I returned from NY, and I barely have time to breathe, yet again. But here I am, so welcome back! Smile

As Ed said on my behalf, Facebook is indeed taking the crown away from UT, for obvious reasons and also those mentioned above. Mistakes have been made in the management of this forum, and in combination with the fact that Suzanne hasn't released an album of new songs in a while isn't helping either… If Suzanne releases something new next year, after CMTAL and the Close Up volumes, things may turn for the better.

Regarding Some Journey, the 'railway' effect is intentional, I think, to emphasize the journey part, to give the impression of that "eastbound train through some black sleeping town".

Suzanne's music is centered around her acoustic guitar, and almost always has been. The synthesizers, drums, bass and rhythm guitar are usually additions after the song had been written using the guitar. There are exceptions to this generalization, that arose from a collaborative songwriting effort with the whole band during the DoOH days, for instance.

Whoa… A blast from the past!!

How are you, Uncwilly, and what's new with you? Loooooong time no see. Welcome to the Undertow mark IV (if you count the magazine), started last February with the Close Up project. All past posts are safe on some backup disk somewhere, or so I'm told by the administrator.

She mentioned me, has she? Well, when a person comes to see you from the other side of the world, I expect it remains in memory. How did you like the play? I really enjoyed it, as I described in my post. I wonder if there was anything different between the previews we saw and the final version that's running now.

Anyway, great to have you back!

Hello!
I know this thread is old but thought I'd check in having seen many familiar names. I was on the meer.net list from circa 1996 until whenever it stopped existing. Being young and reckless at the time my alias was my real (unusual and highly searchable) first name which I no longer like to put on the net quite so easily. I used to be an anxious young woman from Finland, now not so young Smile and living in London, UK. The old Undertow community, and Suzanne's music, helped me through some tough teenage times. Even got to use the Undertow secret handshake once to meet Suzanne after a show in Pori. I was completely dumbstruck though!
I've just bought my ticket for the Barbican show. Can't wait!

Welcome back! That secret handshake still appears to work (unless Suzanne has other obligations) so definitely give it a try.

iitu, welcome back to Undertow! I  think all words of welcome have been written above, so please read if you haven't already.

I actually considered going to the Barbican show too, but the costs are too high. Flights, hotel room, transportation, and of course I'd need to convince my wife to shoulder the burden over here for 2-3 days while I'm away… A bit too much. I know it's a special show, but it just won't happen for me :-(

I thought I would post here as well, as I, too, used to contribute to the previous message board. Long time fan of SV, I'm still going to her gigs in both Italy and the US. It's good to be back here: I see many familiar names!
