Terrible! Terrible! I can’t believe it has been so long since I updated the blog. Bad bad girl. I really thought it had been a week or two. And instead it has been 2 months! We have just left the UK – the London show was a burst of joyful celebration, and I was sad to leave. Though we are coming back in July to Oxford and Bournemouth. So there’s another chance for a cream tea, which I neglected to have on this trip.
I have been doing so much press for the Close-Up Series which for the most part has been received fantastically well. I think there was only one review that said it falls flat without the production but almost every other thing I’ve read has been positive. But I’ll bet you’re wondering what the heading is about, aren’t you?
A few days ago I recorded a TV show for the BBC with Loudon Wainwright III and Richard Thompson, which I really enjoyed. (See above.) They have been on tour together in the States doing the Loud and Rich tour. Back when I was married to Mitchell Froom he worked on a couple of Richard Thompson’s records, so we saw a lot of him in those days. On Tuesday I said hello to him backstage – then “I love one of your songs – it’s that dark obsessive song that mentions a ring?” “A lot of them have rings,” he said, looking bewildered.
The show went so well. I did a duet with Loudon playing the part of his wife – the song was about not being able to sell his house and so the couple stays together… got a great response from the audience. Richard played on Gypsy and the Queen and the Soldier. They tried to sing backup in “Frank and Ava” but completely missed their cue and forgot the words.
So last night I found the song I used to love — it’s called “I Ride In Your Slipstream” and I have been playing it all morning on the bus. I was thinking – I wish Richard would do a “Close-Up” series so I could hear the lovely guitar playing and hear all the dark brooding songs in one place. We are in Poland today.
